NOVA Saudi Academy

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Map, News) – A study finds that textbooks at a private Islamic school in northern Virginia teach students it is permissible for Muslims to kill adulterers and converts from Islam.

The Islamic Saudi Academy receives much of its funding from the Saudi government and teaches roughly 900 students in grades K-12 at campuses in Alexandria and Fairfax.”

I’ve talked with a number of Republicans, and read a number of “conservative” blogs, and it seems like the general opinion is that this school should be shut down because of what they teach their students. The ones I spoke with said that the school was teaching “hate and intolerance” and should be closed down.

I disagree.

Free speech is free speech — whether you agree with the speech or not. While I don’t personally agree with what they’re teaching at this school, they have the right to teach whatever they want to teach. It only becomes a crime if they act upon those teachings and harm someone.

Hell, look at what our government mandated youth indoctrination camps (public schools) teach children each day:

* The tyrant Lincoln was a great and noble man…

* The communist FDR saved the US from the Great Depression…

* Capitalism is greed and evil

Shouldn’t us Republicans be spending our energy trying to get rid of the Department of Education, instead of trying to close down schools because we don’t like what they’re teaching?

Oh wait, I forgot. Republicans love the Department of Education — so much so that we’ve doubled the size of it.

Update:  I was just reading a great piece on the late Senator Robert Taft, known as Mr. Republican, when I came across the following quote of his that can be applied to the above story:

When I say liberty, I mean liberty of the individual to think his own thoughts and live his own life as he desires to think and live.”

  1. Your free speech argument is well presented, as well as your point on Republicans and the Department of Education.

I would not want government (at any level) subsidizing one of these schools nor leasing to them.

  2. Thanks Grande.

I don’t want government, at any level, funding schools at all. But, if there is a role for government, it’s definitely not federal, but instead is a local issue. In a real free market I would just choose to live in the local community that didn’t tax me for government schools. Ah, a long for the days when liberty actually existed in America.

  3. Great post.
